Heroes Are A Breed Apart

I’m a mad keen cricket fan so this little video of “The Little Master” - Sachin Tendulkar is great.  The Indians love their cricket and have produced some fantastic batsman over the years. Beg me the indulgence if you aren’t a cricket fan!!

Here’s to your own success

I learned recently of the passing late last year of one of the great motivational speakers Charlie “Tremendous” Jones.  Charlie was famous on the motivational speaking circuit for many years with his humour.  The world is a poorer place for his passing but a much better place for the contribution that he made to so many people whilst he was alive.

I thought you might enjoy to see some footage of the great man at work.

He had some fantastic one liners such as:

“Nothing Works…” and “Life Is Tremendous”. Charlie believed in humour as a way of bringing joy and also in educating others.  As he said “Learning to live begins with developing positive attitudes and your inner vision”.

And most famously he said You will be no different in five years from what you are now, except for the places you go, the people you meet and the books you read”.

RIP Charlie.  You will be missed…but your memory will also be treasured.

Here’s to your success and to more people like Charlie

Most Frightening Day Of My Life
Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Well we have just come through what has been an extremely traumatic few days. You see, we live in a suburb in Brisbane, Queensland called “The Gap”. No, its not a clothing brand out here but a place where people live. On Sunday afternoon we had a great time. I cleaned the pool, we had our first proper swim of the summer and I played board games with the kids afterwards. We pulled the shades down as we prepared for a typical Brisbane summer afternoon thunderstorm. No big deal, pretty regular and we’ve seen plenty.

Instead, what we got was the most frightening experience of my life. A storm the like of which Brisbane has not seen for many years came in over the Ranges and crashed into a strip of Brisbane suburbs. The Gap was one of the worst hit. Just down the road everyone got what they thought was a heavy storm but we got a wall of water, wind and hail stones. At the end of it there were trees down everywhere and the suburb was a mess. In the following days it was declared a National Disaster area. We got power back last night after a bit over 48 hours and the clean up continues.

Now I was too busy trying to protect my family and myself from the deluge and was seriously worried that my house would be blown away. A little further away some residents captured their own experience of the storm and have posted it on YouTube. Have a watch and see what you think!

At one point in the video the cameraman says “I’m not going to be laughing if my house caves over”. He was lucky it didn’t. 470 homes have been declared unlivable and thousands and thousands more have extensive damage. We had plenty but nothing compared to some of my neighbours.

It all made me think about the inadequacy of my own reaction to some of the huge disasters such as the Tsunami in Asia a few years back, Cyclone Larry, and Hurricane Katrina. I could have done more and should have done more. Having lived my own private little hell this time around I know I will be better next time. To my own neighbours who helped me clean up my own house I say a hearty “thank you”. This experience has shown me a true community spirit and brought me closer to people nearby around me.

Keep your families safe.

Love And The Homeless
Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

I love some of the videos that get uploaded onto YouTube and the creativity that people apply to some of their work. I thought I’d share a video that a friend sent me today that was shot entirely by mobile phone. It provides food for thought and some love to those that are usually sorely neglected on both sides of the Pacific.

Best Wishes

Take Me To Paradise
Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Ann and I have just got back from an incredibly relaxing week on Paradise Bay in the Whitsunday Islands in Queensland, Australia. We had a great time with friends - sailing during the day, great food and wine, and sitting around a campfire in the evenings.

It was doubly interesting because we had no phone or internet for the week…that was hard for me as I’m certainly used to “checking in” regularly. But after a couple of days it was great. We relaxed, read books, talked with friends, played board games and really wound down. It made me realise that its just something that we don’t do enough of in our current fast paced society. It gave some great time for thinking…and some great time for not thinking.

…and at the end of it all, the world was still there. No real disasters had happened. Life went on.

We’ll be back at Paradise Bay sometime soon again for just that reason.
